“The Importance of Cleaning Your Curtains”… Curtains play a much bigger role in your home than you might think. They don’t only help block out sunlight when you’re trying to sleep in on a Sunday morning… they also bring a cosy, finished look to your home.
But here’s the thing… curtains quietly collect a lot of dust, allergens, and even moisture over time.
And because they’re easy to forget about, they often go far too long without a proper clean.
So why does curtain cleaning matter? Let’s take a closer look.
Curtains act a bit like a giant air filter in your home. They trap airborne dust, pet hair, and pollen as they float on by… They are great for your air quality in one sense, but if you never clean them, they are not so great.
If you’ve noticed your curtains looking dull, weighed down, or a little dusty, chances are it’s time to freshen them up. Not only will they look better, but regular cleaning can help reduce sneezing and irritation from allergens too.
Certain types of curtains… especially the blackout or heavy-lined ones… can encourage condensation to build up on windows.
Over time, this dampness can settle into the fabric and lead to mould forming on the back of the curtains.
Mould isn’t just ugly it can affect your indoor air quality and your health. If you’ve spotted any signs of mildew, it’s best not to ignore it. A thorough clean can help remove it before it spreads.
Giving your curtains a light vacuum once or twice a week (using the upholstery attachment) can go a long way in keeping them looking their best.
But for a proper deep clean, we always recommend a professional clean… ideally every one to two years, depending on your environment. Trying to wash them at home can lead to shrinkage or damage, especially with delicate fabrics or lined curtains.
