You are just sitting down for the evening and enjoying a glass of Red Wine; you reach for the remote and spill some on your lovely carpet. Quick, grab your phone and google; what can I use to remove a red wine stain from my carpet?

Just like that, you have so many options. You panic slightly. You know, when you spill Red wine on your carpet, this requires immediate action, and then you remember a friend telling you about the white wine trick to remove this.

It is a good trick, but I would save the white wine and grab some white vinegar instead and a clean white cloth or kitchen towel. 

How to remove a red wine stain from your carpet:

Before I go too far, please remember this is something to try and may not work, especially if it is dry. 

Blot up as much of the wine as you can using a clean white cloth. Blotting is so important, be sure not to wipe over the stain! Now dilute the vinegar with about half as much water, then pour the solution onto the blotted stain. Blot over the stain with another dry, clean white cloth when the stain looks lightened. Leave the cloth over the Carpet stain until it is dry.

What to not do:

There are a few things that will come to your head or even on google, but we don’t recommend them. Here are just a few things we know people have tried and brief explanations of why we don’t recommend them:

• Washing up liquid – in all washing up liquids, there are chemicals to remove grease so that may damage your carpet. It generally leaves a slightly green stain in place of the stain you were trying to remove. (it also foams and foams and foams, and you can never seem to get it out properly.) 
• Vanish – again, chemicals inside these will bleach your floor or leave a mark. 
• Anti-bac spray – bleaching ingredients will damage and lighten your carpet.
• Hydrogen peroxide – if this is misused, it can change the colour and damage your carpet.

Of course, it is always best to use a professional cleaning company as they have all the correct equipment and detergents to remove the stain safely. But try not to wait too long before contacting them because the longer the stain is in the carpet, the less chance of it being completely removed, as it would have worked its way into the carpet’s fibres. If you are unsure, always ask for advice.
