We get many questions about our upholstery cleaning service… one that came up recently was how do we clean dralon sofas? What do you think of when someone asks you about Dralon sofas? I instantly think of my nana’s sofa… or pictures of me as a toddler standing on my parent’s first three-piece suite. When I told my son what I would write about, he asked me what Dralon was, hahaha!
About Dralon, developed in the 1950s
This material is an artificial fabric developed in the 1950s Dormagen in Germany and made for various items. Some popular things were:
- Upholstery
- Carpet
- Curtains
- Workwear
- Furniture
They say no dry cleaning is needed when you have a carpet or sofa made of Dralon! Dirtproof, and generally, a regular vacuum will do.
The one thing you must remember when thinking about cleaning this fabric… never clean with water over 50 degrees Celsius or 122 Fahrenheit. If the cleaning company you chose comes in with any steam cleaner… stop them!! It will not do your sofa any good! Especially if it’s the older Dralon, you could damage it beyond repair… remember, if in doubt, call your friendly professional out!
Did you know it was flammable? Yes, the older fabric was declared dangerous. When the fabric burned, it also gave off extremely hazardous fumes. Dralon modernized its brand due to European standards and developed a flame-retardant version of this fantastic fabric.
Upholstery Cleaning – How you clean your Dralon sofa:
Step 1:
Brush with a soft brush… make sure it’s very soft. After all, this is a soft fabric! Brushing with a soft brush will remove all unwanted dirt.
Step 2:
Using the upholstery nozzle, give the sofa another good once over. Please pay close attention to the headrests and arms; they receive the most oils and grease from hands and heads.
Step 3:
If you find a lot of greases, don’t despair… you can buy a grease solvent that can remove most stains. You simply apply and blot. (Solvents can be harsh on any material, so be very careful with this step. If you’re not sure, seek professional help)
Step 4:
With a synthetic sponge, apply a dry foam upholstery cleaner. (Always follow instructions to avoid damage)
Step 5:
Once it’s clean and dried, brush with a soft brush and vacuum again… this should make the sofa’s texture look normal.
Tip: If there are any creases, use a damp cloth to brush that area, and it should lift it out.
