Moving home can be stressful enough without the added worry about your Rugs and how to store them. You want to be all excited about the big move, but you can’t help thinking, “how do I store my expensive Rug away in storage”?
It is the last thing you have time to think about the storing and transporting/shipping your Rug correctly and before you know it it’s too late and the damage has been done.
We always recommend that you get your Rug professionally cleaned before storing or transporting it, most professional Rug cleaning companies like Art of Clean will offer to prepare your Rug for storing properly and offer expert advice.
The dirt builds up in a Rug acts as a food source for bacteria and insects, making it the perfect environment for them to multiply.
Pet Urine turns into alkaline once dry, and the bacteria that break it down produce alkaline gas in this process, and this can cause lasting damage to the pile.
Rugs can be the perfect breeding ground for carpet moths as you do not know what your Rug comes in contact with while in storage or on the journey to your new home.
We have heard some horror stories where clients find their inheritance or a cherished family heirloom rug destroyed from inadequate storage procedures.
Rugs are unrolled and found riddled with moth or rodent holes, covered with mildew damage, moisture, pet urine or faeces stains that have faded the dyes and are set forever because the rugs were stored dirty and in uncontrolled heated storage environments.
What can I do if I don’t use a professional?
Try not to wrap your rugs in plastic, we always recommend wrapping your Rug in something called TYVEK or acid-free PAPER.
Wool carpets and Rugs has a moisture content even when it is dry, so changes in heat can cause them to sweat.
You should not wrap wool rugs in plastic, or you will create a potential mildew problem. Tyvek Paper is best (tear and water-resistant).
